Pro soccer player Robbie Rogers says he is gay

Robbie Rogers, a former player for the U.S. national team and Major League Soccer, says he is gay and "could not be happier" about his decision to go public with his disclosure.

In a post on his personal website, Rogers writes: "Life is only complete when your loved ones know you. ... Try explaining to your loved ones after 25 years you are gay."

Rogers' agent, Shaun Higgins, confirmed to The Associated Press on Saturday that the post was from his client. Rogers, who linked his Friday post from his Twitter account, said he was retiring.

"It's time discover myself away from football," he said. "It's 1 a.m. in London as I write this and I could not be happier with my decision. Life is so full of amazing things. I realized I could only truly enjoy my life once I was honest."

The midfielder has been receiving an outpouring of support from American teammates, players in England's professional leagues, soccer officials and others around the world.

While several major individual-sport athletes have been openly gay, no professional athlete in any of the four major North American team sports has come out until well after he was done playing. US women's soccer star Megan Rapinoe came out last year before the Olympics and plays for Lyon in France.

Rogers played for the Columbus Crew of MLS from 2007 to 2011, winning the MLS Cup in 2008. For the United States, Rogers made 18 appearances, seven in games that were not exhibitions. He scored two goals, one in a CONCACAF Gold Cup match, and another to give the US a draw in an exhibition game against Mexico.

Among those tweeting support to Rogers were many U.S. teammates and U.S. women's players, MLS Commissioner Don Garber, NBA star Steve Nash, Minnesota Vikings punter Chris Kluwe and former England star and broadcaster Gary Lineker.

After five seasons in MLS, Rogers went to play in England last January. He joined Leeds United, which plays one step below the Premier League. He never really got going with Leeds because of injuries and went on loan to third-division Stevenage for this season. After more injury trouble, he returned to Leeds in January and was released.

2012 Season Recap

"... It's going to be very uncomfortable for the next couple of weeks and months at Valley Ranch. ... Change is necessary at 8-8. A change will happen."

Those were Jerry Jones' words a couple of days after the Cowboys ended the 2012 season the same way they ended the 2011 season: with a disappointing loss to an NFC East rival with the division title on the line. In 2011, it was the Giants beating Dallas on national television on their way to the Super Bowl. But if Jones could possibly excuse that loss -- New York, after all, has a proven record of success and was in the middle of a world-beating six-game streak on the way to the Lombardi Trophy -- he was in no such mood for another offseason of status quo after watching the long-suffering, now-upstart Redskins leapfrog his team to relevancy in the snap of a finger.

Immediately after that season-ending loss to Washington, Jones admitted being impressed with the make-up of the Redskins, and you could sense a bit of longing, some jealousy that his own team wasn't nearly as impressive. While Robert Griffin III injected new life into a moribund franchise, Jones' Cowboys dealt with the same frustrating issues -- a lack of consistency on the field, a constant inability to play up to potential, a recurring problem with coming up small in big moments and befuddling and often backfiring sideline decisions from the coaching staff. It's been the same story in Dallas for years now.

The Cowboys were an average team in 2012, but not consistently average. They were spectacular at times, and spectacularly bad at others; one of the team's trademarks last season was a trend of falling into deep first-half deficits, only to mount furious second-half stands that occasionally resulted in comeback wins. So they were never boring, as the Cowboys rarely are. But they also weren't very successful, and it seems as if enough is finally enough with the man in charge.

Stat To Feel Good About

10. The number of touchdowns by Dez Bryant in a seven-game scoring streak that started in Week 10. Bryant entered the season facing numerous questions, as well as a reported set of rules laid down by the Cowboys to keep the super-talented but inconsistent receiver focused on football. After a slow start to the season (four 75-plus-yard games, two touchdowns in the first half), Bryant and Tony Romo finally found an unstoppable rapport. The franchise desperately needed the light to turn on and Bryant to emerge as the elite receiver he's always flashed the ability to be; it didn't happen immediately in 2012, but it did happen, and that's good news moving forward.

If It Ain't Broke ...

From a numbers standpoint, there's a lot to like about the Cowboys passing offense. And when Bryant and Miles Austin are both healthy, that rings especially true. But despite either not missing much time last season, both were plagued by nagging injuries that at times seemed to hamper their play, Austin especially in a late-season swoon that saw him catch just 25 balls over the last eight games. After losing ace No. 3 wideout Laurent Robinson in free agency prior to 2012, Romo and the Cowboys passing game could take another step forward with a reliable slot receiver to open space for Bryant to be even more effective in 2013.

Troubling Stat

1.5. Yards per snap allowed in coverage by Danny McCray, the most of all safeties on the field for 50 percent of their teams' snaps, per Pro Football Focus.

Must Fix It

If all goes according to plan, McCray won't be a starting concern in 2013. Barry Church should ideally return from the torn right Achilles that sidelined him after Week 3, and McCray will head back to the bench.

Still, it's no guarantee that Church -- a rising star the Cowboys felt really good about prior to his injury -- is back by Week 1; even if he's on the field, there's no telling what the team is going to get from him, at least early as he catches back up with game speed. And McCray, despite his flaws, is a restricted free agent. So though it's likely that Church plays and McCray returns, there's still some uncertainty at the position.

The team has little-to-no money to spend in free agency, and greater needs to address in the first round (more on that below). But a nice option to fortify the position is T.J. McDonald, who was coached at USC by Monte Kiffin, the team's new defensive coordinator. McDonald can be a standout at either safety position and should be available in the second or even third round.

More On The To-Do List

1. Overhaul the offensive line, except Tyron Smith. The Cowboys are set at LT, but nowhere else. Doug Free was the most penalized lineman in the league, with 15 flags, and the unit's 46 sacks allowed (16th) would be much higher if not for Romo's mobility. This is where the Cowboys should be looking in the first round.

2. Draft personnel to help the switch to the 4-3 defense. This holds especially true up front. With Spencer possibly moving on in free agency, the team has one true playmaker at end in DeMarcus Ware, and the situation is slightly worse at tackle. If OL isn't the target in the first, the DL will be, and the rising Shariff Floyd would be an excellent addition. Floyd excels at tackle, but can also play end.

3. Add talented depth at running back. DeMarco Murray hasn't proven he can stay healthy, and Felix Jones has likely played his last game in Dallas. Murray is a three-down back when healthy; the Cowboys need insurance for the times he's not.

What We'll Be Saying In July

Here's the good news: The Cowboys have plenty of options to get under the cap -- expect restructurings or extensions for Romo, Ware, Free, Jason Hatcher and Brandon Carr. Here's the bad: All of that maneuvering will just get Dallas to a tenable cap situation, not necessarily one where it'll be able to make a splash. Re-signing Spencer is still a possibility (although it wouldn't necessarily be a bad move for the team to let him walk; there's something fishy about a 29-year-old who finally finds production in a contract year, and some team is bound to offer Spencer a deal he won't live up to), but beyond that Cowboys fans should expect the team to sit out free agency's opening big-money frenzy, tweaking their roster through smart bargains and the draft.

We'll also have some clarity about how the team approaches big strategic uncertainties on each side of the ball -- the move to the 4-3 on defense and the decision to use a different offensive play-caller than Jason Garrett. Despite the cautionary words about the Cowboys keeping Spencer, it seems likely the two sides strike a deal. And on offense, even though Garrett has indicated that there may not necessarily be a change to who dictates the Dallas attack, expect offensive coordinator Bill Callahan to be the one relaying messages to Romo come September.

Data-Driven Bill Gates Wears Rose-Colored Glasses in Mexico

By Keith Kloor | February 14, 2013 5:01 am

Bill Gates is the world?s most generous?humanitarian. He is also very ambitious and self-assured. Last month in the Wall Street Journal, Gates?outlined his plan to ?fix the world?s greatest problems,? as the headline of his piece stated. (It is reproduced from his annual letter.) This includes reducing child mortality and improving educational performance by better measuring the effectiveness of aid programs.

Nobody can question Gates? motives, but his methods are not immune to criticism. Some smart people have sharply?criticized?(even ridiculed) his overall approach to international development. Others are not so blunt, and?argue?instead that it is the culture of development that needs to be reformed.

It?s no surprise that Gates, the king of all geeks, wants aid programs to be data-driven. But he should lead by example and not be so cavalier with statistics, as he is here, in this recent note lauding the creation of a new agricultural facility?in Mexico (my emphasis):

One reason why I always enjoy going to Mexico is because of the country?s incredible progress, which has been really encouraging for me to get to see as I?ve spent time there over the years first for Microsoft and lately for our foundation. Despite the many challenges Mexico still faces, since 1995, the country has been able to cut its poverty rate from about 15% to less than 2% today. A major driver in reducing poverty has been agricultural development, especially innovations that have helped improve crop yields for smallholder farmers, whose lives have improved a lot as a result.

Huh? Since when has Mexico reduced it?s poverty rate so drastically? From the Pew Research Hispanic Center (April, 2012):

Despite a moderate long-term rise in per capita GDP, the share of Mexicans who live below the poverty line has not changed significantly in recent decades. It was 51% in 2010, down slightly from 53% in 1984.

And from the World Bank:

According to?CONEVAL?(sp) (National Council on Evaluation of Social Development Policy) the number of Mexicans living in poverty to 2010 is estimated in 52 million people. This implies that around 46.2% of Mexico?s total population lives in poverty, mainly in urban areas.

Meanwhile, extreme poverty (those living with less than $978 pesos, US $76) a month in urban areas and less than $684 pesos (US $53) in rural areas reduced slightly from 10.6% to 10.4% (11.7 million people).

This is not to say that Mexico hasn?t made great economic strides, which owes in part to the emergence of the country?s high tech sector.?That is something Gates can surely appreciate.

Hagel nomination heading to vote on Senate floor

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A moderate Republican senator once thought to be a possible backer of Chuck Hagel's nomination to be secretary of defense said she'll oppose his confirmation, while other GOP senators signaled they may delay a floor vote on the nomination unless the White House provides more information about the deadly attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya.

Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, said Wednesday that Hagel's views on the most critical threats facing the United States are "unsettling." In a four-page statement, Collins said Hagel was unwilling to ask the European Union to designate Hezbollah a terrorist organization in 2006, and he has been hesitant to back the use of all non-military options, such as unilateral sanctions, to pressure Iran into ceasing its nuclear program.

As Collins voiced her opposition to Hagel, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., set the stage for a full Senate vote on Hagel, President Barack Obama's choice to succeed Defense Secretary Leon Panetta. Reid filed a motion to limit debate and force a vote, which is expected to be held on Friday. Democrats hold a 55-45 edge in the Senate and have the numbers to confirm Hagel on a majority vote, but would need the support of five Republicans to clear the way for an up-or-down vote on Hagel.

A president's pick for a cabinet post usually requires only a majority vote, leading Reid to accuse Senate Republicans of orchestrating a filibuster against a nominee for secretary of defense for the first time in the country's history.

But the top Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee said it's not unusual to hold a cabinet nominee to a 60-vote threshold. "It's not a filibuster," said Sen. James Inhofe, R-Okla. "This has happened (before), and it's happening again right now."

A bitterly divided Armed Services Committee on Tuesday voted to approve Hagel by a 14-11 vote, with all the panel's Democrats backing him. The committee's Republicans were unified in their opposition to their onetime colleague, a former two-term Republican senator from Nebraska and twice-wounded Vietnam combat veteran.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said Wednesday that he would vote against ending debate on Hagel's nomination to be defense secretary because he wants more information on Obama's actions on the night of the Sept. 11 raid on the mission in Benghazi. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans died in the Sept. 11 raid.

Graham, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., and Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R-N.H., wrote to Obama on Tuesday and asked whether he spoke to any Libyan government official during the assault.

"There seems to not be much interest to hold this president accountable for a national security breakdown that led to the first ambassador being killed in the line of duty in over 30 years," Graham said. "No, the debate on Chuck Hagel is not over. It has not been serious. We don't have the information we need. And I'm going to fight the idea of jamming somebody through until we get answers about what the president did personally when it came to the Benghazi debacle."

McCain declined to say Wednesday whether he would try to filibuster or delay Hagel's confirmation if Obama did not provide an answer. "My position right now is I want an answer to the question," he said.

After the committee vote, McCain said he did not want a filibuster of Hagel's nomination. "We have not filibustered a Cabinet appointee in the past and I believe that we should move forward with his nomination, bring it to the floor and vote up or down," he said.

Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., the chairman of the Armed Services Committee, said he's confident the White House will supply the information and that Hagel will be confirmed.

Collins, who serves on the Senate Intelligence Committee, said she would not join in a filibuster to block a final vote.

In her statement, Collins said Hagel's "courageous military service deserves our praise and gratitude" and that he cares deeply about the welfare of the troops. But she could not get past what she described as Hagel's troubling record on key national security issues. Confirming him as secretary of defense would send the wrong message to the country's allies and adversaries about the resolve of the United States, Collins said.

"I am unable to support Senator Hagel to be the next secretary of defense because I do not believe his past positions, votes, and statements match the challenges of our time, and his presentations at his (confirmation) hearing did nothing to ease my doubts," Collins said. "I regret having to reach that conclusion given our personal relationship and my admiration for Senator Hagel's military service. But I have concluded that he is not well-suited for the tremendous challenges our country faces during this dangerous era in our history."

Two Republicans ? Sens. Thad Cochran of Mississippi and Mike Johanns of Nebraska ? have announced their support for Hagel.

Google's YouTube sues Russian watchdog

MOSCOW: YouTube has filed a lawsuit against Russian consumer rights watchdog Rospotrebnadzor over a controversial Russian content-restricting law, its parent company Google said.

The law on protection of children from harmful information that came into force in 2012 authorises regulators to block access to data deemed "harmful to the health and development" of children through promotion of suicide, porn and drugs.

Critics claim the law might be used as an internet censorship means, but Russian authorities dismiss the claims.

The lawsuit filed in a Moscow court is against Rospotrebnadzor's decision to block access to a "video lesson on how to cut veins."

"In this case, we have appealed the decision of the Russian consumer watchdog because we do not believe that the goal of the law was to limit access to videos that are clearly intended to entertain viewers," the Wall Street Journal quoted Google as saying in a statement.

YouTube was briefly put on a blacklist of websites with harmful content in November 2012.

Media and communications watchdog Roskomnadzor said the website had "suicide promotion" materials.
