Universal Celebrates Centennial with Its Best-Ever Box Office Tally

The overall box office results might be mired in one of the worst end-of-summer slumps in years, but for at least one studio, 2012 has been a year to remember -- for all the right reasons.

Universal, currently celebrating its 100th anniversary with a yearlong revival of some of its most beloved films, announced today that last weekend's grosses put the studio past the $1.128 billion mark for the year -- the highest tally in its history.

NBCUniversal CEO Steve Burke -- who was already having a pretty good day after getting the news that NBC topped last night's TV ratings -- issued a congratulatory statement, saying, "Our film team has done a great job starting to turn things around and preparing the studio for the future. They have built some great new franchises, reinvigorated some older ones and acquired some very promising intellectual property. We are excited to see them execute on their plan in the years to come."

As the Hollywood Reporter points out, that $1.128 billion largely came courtesy of two films (The Lorax and Ted, which combined for $432 million), but the news is liable to get even better for Universal, as the studio has four more high-profile films on the docket for the year: Pitch Perfect, The Man with the Iron Fists, This Is 40, and Les Miserables.

As impressive as the numbers are for Universal, it's worth noting that the studio's still only in fourth place among all studios on the year -- Warner Bros. remains in first place, with a 15.9% market share and grosses approaching $1.26 billion. Last year's champ, Paramount, is lagging in a distant seventh place.
